40th NW Filmmakers’ Fest Highlights: The SHORTS II program

A Beginning Middle End

Join us this Saturday, November 9th at 7pm for the SHORTS II presentation at the 40th Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival at our Whitsell Auditorium, located in the Portland Art Museum (1219 SW Park Avenue).  This lively program of documentary, experimental, and animated shorts from across the Northwest region screens twice more during the Festival at McMenamins’ Mission Theater.

Here’s what to expect from this year’s SHORTS II presentation:

CHERYL’S SPIN
DIRECTOR: KATHY WITKOWSKY – (MISSOULA, MT)
(DOC) A mother wades through her life of domestic abuse with a resilience and cheery willingness to continue to try new things.
15 Minutes

LAKE BEAST
DIRECTOR: VANCE REESER – (PORTLAND)
(ANI) A childhood vision compels a man to explore the bottom of a toxic lake.
8 Minutes

THE ROPER
DIRECTOR: ANNA SANDILANDS, EWAN MCNICOL – (SEATTLE)
(DOC) The true short story of Kendrick, a young calf roper in Lafayette, Louisiana, who dreams of one day making it to the rodeo national championship.

GROUND LONDON
DIRECTOR: DUSTIN MORROW – (PORTLAND)
(EXP) Explore the eco-urban tourist landscape of one of the world’s most visited cities from a perspective less than three inches off the ground.

SPLIT ENDS
DIRECTOR: JOANNA PRIESTLEY – (PORTLAND)
(ANI) Abstract compositions inspired by vintage wallpaper and wrapping paper stimulate a collective memory of youthful self-hypnosis and visual absorption.

DIRECTOR: JON BEHRENS – (SEATTLE)
(EXP) A truck explodes into a kaleidoscope of painted, optically printed animation.

CHARADE
DIRECTOR: SALISE HUGHES – (SEATTLE)
(EXP) Through manipulated footage of the classic film CHARADE, Hughes contemplates identity and celebrity.
9 Minutes

$500 OF PARTY
DIRECTOR: NANDAN RAO – (CORVALLIS, OR)
(DOC) Rao offers $500 he won in a grant to whomever sends him the most compelling video explaining how they would use the cash to throw an epic party.
14 Minutes

SHORTS II screens Saturday, November 9 at 7pm in our Whitsell Auditorium (located in the Portland Art Museum) as part of the 40th Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival in our Whitsell Auditorium (located in the Portland Art Museum).  It also screens on Monday, November 11 at 8:45pm and Friday, November 15 at 7pm at McMenamins’ Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan).
