Martin Scorsese’s masterpiece of late-American Dream excess and the decaying effects of a ceaseless lust for money follows Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), a young man who idolizes the mobsters he sees in his neighborhood every day, as he works his way up the Brooklyn mafia hierarchy over a thirty-year period.  Perched above him in the pecking order is a ferocious trio: soft-spoken patriarch Paul Cicero (Paul Sorvino), the charismatic “Jimmy the Gent” (Robert DeNiro), and the terrifying, high-strung Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci). As we learn the deep inner workings of the Italian-American mafia through Hill’s experiences, longtime Scorsese cinematographer Michael Ballhaus’s camera incessantly roves, capturing every minute detail, while Thelma Schoonmaker’s crisp editing propels the story along at near-breakneck pace. Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation and the British Film Archive teamed up for this dazzling digital restoration of one of the masterpieces of British, and musical, cinema. In many ways an artistic companion piece to THE RED SHOES, Powell and Pressburger’s adaptation of French composer Jacques Offenbach’s 1881 opera tells the tale of a melancholy poet who dreams of three women—a mechanical performing doll, a bejeweled satanic siren and a consumptive opera singer—all of whom break his heart in different ways. Krzysztof Kieślowski’s epic miniseries The Decalogue—contemporary stories based on the Ten Commandments played out in a Warsaw apartment block—was a landmark innovation in late 1980s European television. A SHORT FILM ABOUT KILLING (from Decalogue V) tragically mixes the destinies of two odd and unsettling characters who wander the streets of Warsaw. The grim narrative is, in the end, an intelligent meditation on both the act of murder and the ordeal of capital punishment. (84 mins.)

Rupert Pupkin (Robert De Niro) is a delusional schmuck living with his mother and a life-size cardboard cutout of Liza Minnelli, practicing to become a famous stand-up comedian. He leaves his basement set to stalk Johnny Carson-like talk show host Jerry Langford (icily played by Jerry Lewis), in the hopes of securing a spot on his show. Willing to go to great lengths to break into show biz, Pupkin enlists his madcap friend Masha (Sandra Bernhard) to help him kidnap Langford. Darkly hilarious, THE KING OF COMEDY is considered by many to be one of Scorsese and De Niro’s finest and most overlooked works. (109 mins.)

A chronicle of family loyalty and disintegration, Visconti’s epic masterpiece is one of the most powerful and emotionally charged movies ever made. Rosaria Parondi and her five sons journey north to Milan to seek a better life, but the industrial north proves just as unforgiving as the desolation in Sicily. Simone (Renato Salvatori) becomes the first brother to find success—but his career as a boxer flounders when he meets Nadia (Annie Girardot), a beautiful prostitute. When Simone’s possessiveness drives Nadia away, she falls in love with his younger brother Rocco (Alain Delon). The lovers set in motion a shattering chain of events for which the family’s traditional values leave them unprepared. The most dramatic and spectacular film of Visconti’s career, its sweeping operatic style, Nino Rota score, and striking Giuseppe Rotunno cinematography influenced the work of directors Martin Scorsese (MEAN STREETS), Francis Ford Coppola (THE GODFATHER), and a generation of other filmmakers.
