Join the School of Film this summer to for our beginning level course instructing how to shoot and edit short films and upload them to Vimeo.

Topics: learn the basics of camera operation, shooting, and editing; shoot and edit two short films through exercises which teach the basics of visual expression; shoot and edit a short individual final project of your own; bring in work-in-progress for class critique; set up a Vimeo channel and upload all work.

Prerequisites: None
Allocated gear: Canon XA-10 HD camera, Avid Media Composer 6.5
Qualifies for Avid discount

The workshop runs Mondays,TUESDAYS, JUN 25-AUG 20, 6:30-9:30 PM, at the Northwest Film Center School of Film (934 SW Salmon).

Sound Advice with Kelley Baker

On Wednesday, May 9, we have the pleasure of hosting Portland filmmaker Kelley Baker for some (yeah, you guessed it) sound advice! It will be an evening of film clips, conversation, and a book signing celebrating his new book THE ANGRY FILMMAKER SURVIVAL GUIDE PART TWO: SOUND CONVERSATIONS WITH (un)SOUND PEOPLE.

To show off just how far sound takes you in a film, Kelley (at Room 529 in the Hotel Modera) put together a scene–one scene with several different scenarios, divulging just how critical sound is to our understanding of story.

MAKE IT SHORT: Talking With Kurtis Hough About His Viral Submission

Kurtis Hough’s entry to our MAKE IT SHORT contest (the one rule: to keep the total running time at 40 seconds or under–in celebration of 40 years of the Film Center in the making!) made a big splash, pun intended. Going viral on the Internet, with half a million hits in one day, was just the beginning for this tragic movie with a happy ending.
